The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Toronto signed an agreement effective Sept. 6 on behalf of the ROC government with Canada’s New Brunswick province for the mutual recognition of driver’s licenses, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Sept. 9. This is the third Canadian province after Manitoba and Quebec to sign such an agreement.


The 10th International Conference of Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies is taking place Sept. 9-12 in Taipei City, the ROC Ministry of Transportation and Communications said. More than 800 academics, government officials, industry members and researchers from 33 countries, including Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea and mainland China, make this event the biggest ever EASTS gathering. The conference, organized by Taipei City-based Chinese Institute for Transportation, the MOTC and Taipei City Government, is being held in Taiwan for the first time.


Taiwan’s exports hit US$25.64 billion in August, up 3.6 percent year on year, the Bureau of Foreign Trade under the ROC Ministry of Economic Affairs said Sept. 9. Imports stood at US$21.06 billion, down 1.2 percent on the previous year. Exports for the first eight months of the year were up 2.5 percent year on year at US$201.39 billion, while imports decreased 0.9 percent at US$179.03 billion. The trade surplus for the period is up 41 percent to US$22.36 billion. (SDH)
